In 1997 biologist and science writer Janine Benyus coined the term when she wrote the book Biomimicry—Innovation Inspired by Nature. The interdisciplinary event, titled "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature for a Sustainable World," includes a student poster presentation and competition on related research. To illustrate the history and theory of biomimicry she discusses case studies from her book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. Biomimicry looks closely at design solutions in the natural world and adapts them for human use. The Institute was founded in 2006 by science writer and consultant Janine Benyus in response to overwhelming interest in the subject following the publication of her book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature.
